My last full day in Texas - Megh's baby shower tonight and back to KC tomorrow! =)
Today's topic: Favorite movie.
This topic seems awfully familiar. Oh, right - that's because it was Day 7's topic, too. Nope, not a joke. Whoever made this list of blog topics didn't proof it.
Well, I've blogged about movies and tv shows already (and a smattering of other things) but I haven't been asked about books, yet - and I love reading and I love books.
Loving reading and loving books are different things, but they're not mutually exclusive.
One can love reading and be perfectly happy to read on a computer or an e-reader - you don't need to hold a book in your hand to read it.
But I love books: The way they feel in my hands, the texture of the paper and how it sounds as I turn the page, the smell - especially of older books. I love being able to put a bookmark in (lately a photo of Chinatown in San Francisco) or fold down a corner (which I don't really like doing, but I will if I have to). I love marking them up with a pen and a highlighter, making notes about parts I really love and quotes I want to remember.
I understand the appeal of e-readers. Being able to have a hundred books in the space of one is pretty amazing. That's especially useful for traveling, because who wants to drag around two or three or four books? But I don't travel that much, and taking one book isn't so bad. It's also great if you want to get a subscription to a newspaper that doesn't deliver to your area (my father-in-law had one to the Providence Journal) - but I would want the coupons! Also, from an environmental aspect one could argue that using an e-reader reduces the use of paper for real books and keeps more trees in the ground. I don't know if that's true, though.
Maybe one day I'll join the masses who swear by their Kindles and Nooks, but for now I think I'll stick with the real thing.
